Everything's Better with a Dog

Facebook_red

We came to the Hubbard Hall Writers Workshop tonight as if in costume, attempting to hide our insecurities and check our excitement; each reluctant to fully realize our ideas, perhaps even to articulate them to ourselves. But something brewed beneath the surface and as Jon questioned us and we started to share, you could feel each of us awaken to possibility, to the stories we just might be able to tell if we give ourselves half a chance. I see this with my students at the beginning of every semester, but it is interesting to be on the other side of it. I always try to reassure them as Jon tries to reassure us, already seeing the rich stories they'll produce in the end. They always look like they don't quite believe me, I think I know now what that look feels like. Jon brought his new dog Red, who made himself at home, greeting all the ladies and even lifting the skirt of one with his paw. He's definitely a ladies man. Having him around was fun. Everything's better with a dog, even if he's not a pug!

...And, in the End...

Yesterday, I picked up Vader's ashes. Today, I visited a pet crematorium for an article I am writing. At first, I thought about turning down the assignment, but then I realized I wanted to do it. I was curious. I visited the web site and saw that the place looked friendly, the owner had even created a wooded path for the communal remains of the pets whose owners couldn't claim them. When I arrived for the interview, I was greeted by two dogs, a five-year-old black Lab and it's 9-week-old yellow lab sibling. They danced around my car, fought over a bone, worked on establishing a pecking order. I talked to the owner about Vader, saw the inside of the crematorium and watched the dogs enjoying life.

Laguna Beach

Here I am in Laguna Beach as the Pacific roars outside my hotel room. I am so proud of myself, figuring out how to use the iPad camera attachment to upload photos so I can post them here. It was a long day in the air but because of the time difference it was only 3:00 pm when I got here and I was able to explore. Given the weather and the proximity to water I expected to love Laguna Beach but I did not expect to fall in love with it. That happened when I stumbled upon a dog birthday party in the middle of an outdoor restaurant. I already suspected that this was a dog friendly place from the sheer number of them on the beach and streets but to find a fancy birthday party complete with a bulldog in a birthday hat ( It was his 8th birthday I was informed) and two large Italian dogs (can't remember the breed but not one I am familiar with) and their humans drinking wine and eating birthday cake, well let's just say they had me with the bulldog in the hat! Then I stumbled on Anything Canine, a doggie boutique where I purchased pink bedazzled sunglasses for Alfie ( these are for work people I plan to take her photo in them.) Anyway, if you love dogs and the beach you gotta love it here. Tomorrow begins the first day of the conference. I'm looking forward to it.

Vader

I took Vader outside today to enjoy the warm weather. He sat on his old diving board and enjoyed some time in the grass.
